COLLINS: Don't open a can of worms
MOST OF US have heard the saying, "Don't open a can of worms," implying that if you do, all hell will break loose. There's another statement that carries a lot of weight in light of our losing battle against climate change: Mother Nature has had enough. A few decades ago, Chiffon became one of the first margar...

COLLINS: Kelowna pediatrics closure a symptom of how far the level of care has dropped
I MOVED TO KAMLOOPS IN 1970 and, at that time, many people believed Kamloops would become the main hub of the Interior. With access to highways leading in all directions, both national railways passing through and beautiful scenery, how could we not be the best? But we weren't. I don't know how, but Kelowna managed to ...

COLLINS: Is there ever going to be an end to violence?
THE NUMBER OF VIOLENT INCIDENTS around the world is increasing daily. Every day, it seems, we see stories about stabbings without apparent motive, vehicles being driven into crowds and indiscriminate shootings with automatic weapons. The list grows longer each day. Some of these incidents are pure acts of terrorism and...

COLLINS: A big month for the Pride community and our Indigenous peoples
TODAY IS THE FIRST DAY of an important month. This month marks the time when we celebrate those who are part of the 2SLBGTQIA+ community. This group has fought hard for recognition and acceptance from the greater community. The battle is one that is far from being over. It's become more difficult as the mainstream publi...

COLLINS: Dealing with one of life's toughest decisions
MAKING DECISIONS ABOUT THE FUTURE of those we love requires a strength that takes us to the limit. Moving a family member from home to a care facility means you are determining the future course of their life. It's not a decision you take on your own. Most of the time, the decision is made with the help of professional...

COLLINS: More than just a royal getaway
MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT - the visit to Canada by King Charles and Queen Camilla this week is a HUGE deal for our country. (Sorry for the 'all caps' - the Trump School of Writing creeping in). Seriously, this visit, although short, sends a very blunt message to the U.S. that Canada is its own sovereign nation, capable ...

COLLINS: Is there any future for Canada Post?
CANADA POST IS DEAD in its present form. The question today is whether the corporation can change enough to survive. And that is what the government needs to decide. Remember those old scenic Xmas cards, showing the neighbourhood postie making their rounds, chatting with people in the neighbourhood, petting the animals...

COLLINS: Shades of Jim Carrey
SEVERAL COMMUNITIES, including our nation's capital, are investigating the idea of a "bubble bylaw." This is the latest scheme to prevent protestors from disrupting high profile events at high profile sites. Sites like Parliament Hill, the B.C. Legislature, the Empress Hotel - any place where protestors can g...

COLLINS: The NDP does it to us again
YOU WOULD THINK WE WOULD KNOW BY NOW that trusting the NDP, especially in the field of medicine - and specifically cancer treatment - is treading on unstable ground. A vast group of politicians and health experts this week asked for council support in pressuring the government to redesign plans for new cancer facilitie...

COLLINS: Education - another trouble spot
FOR THE PAST WHILE, I have enjoyed the weekly newsletters of School District 73 Superintendent Rhonda Nixon, who takes us through her week visiting schools in the district and pointing out what various classes are doing. While I still admit to being wary about the loss of things like cursive writing and some of the old...

COLLINS: He is crass, he is a liar - and yet the world bows at his feet
IS DONALD TRUMP'S PLAN working? You might be right if you said "yes" to that question. When Trump came to power just over 100 days ago, he signed so many executive orders, twisting the global economy so out of shape it could take decades to recover. He played tariff war with countries who started off rough an...

COLLINS: Whatever happened to fiscal responsibility?
I ALWAYS ADMIRED MY DAD'S ability to manage money. He would always be able to make sure we had good food and other necessities as required. If we had to borrow money for something major, he would never miss a payment. He was always of the opinion that if you couldn't afford it, you didn't get it. Sadly, the apple fell ...

COLLINS: Finally, a breath of fresh air
I HAVE ADVOCATED for some time now that we need new directions in providing primary health care. And finally, some new possibilities are showing up. Councillor Kelly Hall served a notice of motion Tuesday for council to discuss a plan that is operating well in Colwood. This plan, in rough terms, sees doctors become mun...

COLLINS: People keep getting sucked in by lies
IT ALWAYS AMAZES ME how easily we get sucked in by promises that never materialize. Many of us see some bauble on a social media site. It doesn't cost too much so out comes the credit card. We never see the gift or our money - and if we do see it eventually, it turns out to be a piece of junk. If history hasn't taught ...

COLLINS: Not everyone is wrapped up in politics
NOT MANY OF US have become immune to the scatterbrained schemes of Donald Trump. It's inhumane to have to put up with that every day.But not everyone plays along with Dingo Donnie. Throughout our country and elsewhere, there are groups of men and women who have one goal in mind - to protect our forests and the people w...

COLLINS: Time to put priority on our issues
FOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, all attention has been focused on the big white elephant to the south of us and the man who would be king who has upended the entire world order, creating chaos. At the same time, we need to take this opportunity to stare at our navel, examine our future goals and make a plan to reach them...

COLLINS: Parking woes in the Lansdowne Street parkade
WHY IS IT TAKING SO LONG to fix the elevator in the Lansdowne Street parkade? If you Google the parkade, it is listed as being 'accessible'. However, given that the elevator has been out of service for over three weeks now, not to mention the times it was out of order during the winter months, parking anywhere above th...

COLLINS: Chalk one up for Kamloops
OVER THE YEARS, Kamloops has been seen as a poor second cousin to Kelowna. We are still a mining and mill town, still a dusty city without the beauty of our southern neighbour. So it was nice to get some backhanded good news last week that Kamloops is considered one of the best-positioned cities in the country to withs...
