Kamloops hosting series of open houses to discuss proposed Official Community Plan changes

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops residents can have their say into proposed changes to the city’s Official Community Plan (OCP) at a series of open houses scheduled for later this month.

The Official Community Plan, which is commonly known as KAMPLAN, is the city’s strategic visionary document that staff say brings the community’s values, priorities and aspirations to life.

The document also supports City of Kamloops staff and council in their decision making.

“The 2025 KAMPLAN updates primarily focus on aligning anticipated growth with projected housing needs over the next two decades,” a news release from the City of Kamloops said.

“With recent legislated changes, all local governments must update their Official Community Plans by the end of 2025 to accommodate anticipated housing needs over the next 20 years.”

There are four open houses scheduled between June 11 and June 24, covering the downtown, southwest, North Shore and east Kamloops areas. Attendees will be able to learn more about the city’s plan to address housing needs in addition to changes they can expect to see across a growing city.

“Residents may attend any session. The sessions will be open-house style, with information boards set up and staff available to chat and answer questions,” the city statement added. “Ideas, questions and concerns from the community will be considered when drafting the updated plan.”

While the draft plan is expected to be completed by late summer, the city says there will be more engagement held in the fall, including a public hearing. The plan is expected to be then be adopted by December.

“While an Official Community Plan does not commit a municipality to proceed with any project specified in the plan, all bylaws enacted or works undertaken by the local government must be consistent with the plan,” the city added.

The latest version of the KAMPLAN was adopted in 2018.

• Downtown – Wednesday, June 11, 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Kamloops Yacht Club, 1140 River Street.
• Southwest – Wednesday, June 18, 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., West Highlands Community Centre, 1185 Links Way
• North Shore – Thursday, June 19, 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Kamloops Sports Council Building, McArthur Island Park, 1550 Island Parkway
• East Kamloops – Tuesday, June 24, 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Valleyview Community Hall, 2288 Park Drive
