KAMLOOPS — With fire activity expected to pick up across southern B.C. in the days ahead, thanks to the ongoing spell of warmer than normal temperatures, the BC Wildfire Service is reminding people to report any fires they see as quickly as possible.

Information Officer Cassidy Martin says while you can still call in your reports by dialling 1-800-663-5555 or (*5555 from a cell phone), there have been more and more reports being made through the updated BC Wildfire Service app, which launched last year.

“It’s been super great for us to have as an asset for our operations team,” Martin told CFJC Today. “You can also send a photo with your fire report and that really helps us see what we’re dealing with and what we need to be getting ready for and sending in.”

Martin says its important to keep reporting all potential fire starts into the BC Wildfire Service and to be as detailed as possible, adding that information is often crucial to the effectiveness of the response efforts.

“The public is a lot of the time our eyes and ears so just making sure that if they see any smoke or anything, to call it in,” Martin said. “Or use our BC Wildfire Service app. Its really handy to have, and the photos have been increasing and that’s been really great for us.”

“It’s just photos and not videos that can be sent in, but you’re also able to send those in through your desktop, whichever way you’re able to get to the public dashboard.”

Martin says the app, which is available for both Apple and on Android devices, also has the latest information on fire bans and restrictions, as well as evacuation order and alerts. That information is also available on the BC Wildfire Service dashboard.

As of publishing, the bulk of the fire activity is in northeast B.C., with 65 of 72 active wildfires burning in the Prince George Fire Centre.

That said, the elevated temperatures has caused the fire danger rating across the Kamloops Fire Centre to increase to high with pockets of extreme as of the latest update at 12:00 noon Sunday.
