COLLINS: Kelowna pediatrics closure a symptom of how far the level of care has dropped
I MOVED TO KAMLOOPS IN 1970 and, at that time, many people believed Kamloops would become the main hub of the Interior. With access to highways leading in all directions, both national railways passing through and beautiful scenery, how could we not be the best?
But we weren’t. I don’t know how, but Kelowna managed to zip right on by us. They became the benchmark in every area of civic life, including health care. It’s been that way for years.
But even the mighty can fall, and there are a few chinks showing up in Kelowna General’s armour. Interior Health has temporarily closed the Kelowna pediatric ward for several reasons including concerns by doctors over procedures. Seven young patients have been transferred to other hospitals, including two to RIH.
This is not a case of oneupmanship, where we got one back on Kelowna. It’s an example of how the level of care has fallen. If Kelowna is having issues, what is the situation in Prince Rupert or Dawson Creek? Shouldn’t take too long to figure that out.
