COLLINS: Don’t open a can of worms
MOST OF US have heard the saying, “Don’t open a can of worms,” implying that if you do, all hell will break loose.
There’s another statement that carries a lot of weight in light of our losing battle against climate change: Mother Nature has had enough.
A few decades ago, Chiffon became one of the first margarines on the market. Part of the marketing suggested the margarine’s taste even fooled Mother Nature, at which point Mother Nature says, “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature.”
I get that feeling that Mother Nature is ready to send us a big message. Huge wildfires amid flooding. Polar ice caps melting at alarming rates, drought conditions everywhere, huge piles of garbage stacked in massive landfills in developing countries, a huge island of plastic garbage in the Pacific — and let’s not forget the interference in the fisheries of the world, where many species are becoming extinct. Oh, and let’s not forget the continuing use of oil, coal and other pollutants. And Donald’s move to gut climate control offices. And then he says he wants to bring back plastic straws and single-use plastic grocery bags.
